According to several reports, the Microsoft Xbox Scorpio could potentially be behind the curve as soon as it is launched, as the console's specifications reveal. The new Xbox will be packed with an eight-core CPU coupled with a graphics card boasting 6TFLOPs of power.
It will also have 320GB/sec of memory bandwidth.
Issues when Scorpio launches
Although this is pretty much comparative to one of the today's most powerful PC graphics card - the 6.5TFLOPS Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 - by the time Scorpio officially launches, 1070 will already be in the mid-range bracket, overshadowed by the up and coming Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080Ti.
Nonetheless, Xbox Head Phil Spencer is still very confident that gamers will see a generational leap when it comes to visuals. "I actually believe that the upgrade towards Scorpio in terms of visual fidelity will feel as dramatic a change as we're used to seeing in new generations," Spencer said.
Other issues with the Scorpio
Microsoft's upcoming flagship console recently dealt yet another blow regarding BioWare's upcoming sci-fi adventure game, Mass Effect: Andromeda. BioWare producer Michael Gamble told Survivor that there are absolutely no plans about bringing the anticipated RPG to the Scorpio, though this may change in time.
Spencer confident about the Switch
The Xbox Scorpio made headlines late last year when Spencer hinted that its amazing performance would come at a price. However, he quickly assured the fans that the new console wants to compete exclusively with consoles and not PCs.
"I want people to understand that the Scorpio is going to be a premium console," Spencer told Gamespot in an interview. "Like, I'm not trying to sell you a high-end gaming PC rig for a couple of thousand dollars or something."
The Xbox Scorpio's official release date will likely be announced at this year's E3 convention held at Los Angeles - after the console was teased at the same event last year.
