AT&T is updating the Samsung Galaxy Express with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
The cheaper entry in the Galaxy line is the latest in the AT&T stable of Samsung devices to get the Android 4.1 update, which includes Google Now, enriched notifications and smarter widgets, according to CNET.
AT&T has included a number of additional details in the Android 4.1 update, including Blocking Mode for disabling incoming calls and texts, the website reports. The Samsung Galaxy Express will also feature Easy Mode, which gives users a simpler version of the interface.
Designed to help first-time smartphone buyers navigate Android, the UI includes larger widgets focused on common actions such as adding contacts and setting alarms, according to CNET.
AT&T introduced the Samsung Galaxy Express, a $99.99 midrange 4G LTE smartphone, in the fall. It came with Android 4.0, a 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen, and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor. The phone has a 5-megapixel camera and is equipped with a 2,000mAh battery.
The Galaxy Express and other 4G LTE-ready handsets are part of AT&T's push for its 4G LTE network just as competitor T-Mobile has launched its 4G LTE network today in seven cities.
AT&T, the country's second-largest wireless carrier, has most recently launched 4G LTE in parts of Georgia and Virginia in early February and expanded it in Philadelphia and Baltimore, where it was already operational, according to PC Mag. AT&T's 4G LTE network is in 154 markets, which is less than Verizon's 485-plus markets but ahead of Sprint's 67, per PC Mag.
AT&T will roll out Android 4.1 to the Samsung Galaxy Express automatically over the next several weeks.
To install it manually, once connected to Wi-Fi, navigate to Applications > Settings > About Device > Software Update > Check for Updates.
