The first Shenmue game may have been lost in obscurity since the Dreamcast was quickly overshadowed, but it looks like the developers at Sega are planning to bring it back an HD remaster of the game. Is the world ready for Shenmue HD?
According to Attack of the Fan Boy, rumors have sprung up that the game is being worked on because Sega Europe Ltd. had registerd the domain name of ShenmueHD.com. Other Shenmue-related names have also been registered like ShenmueRemastered.com and SheMnUeGame.com as well - people are guessing the latter was spelled that way to hide it from the public eye.
If fans were to go to these links now, all they would land in is blank pages, however. Some still see this as a sign that Sega is planning something big with the Shenmue franchise that will bring it to modern platforms in 2017. Maybe a Nintendo Switch version could possibly be in the works?
Shenmue was a game that was considered to be a pioneer to the open-world genre that was made popular by franchise like Grand Theft Auto and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Because of Shenmue, games now have weather changes in-game and players can openly search closets and items in every room they visit. The game was so realistic that the shops in Shenmue only operated during business hours, and characters had to stay within their own work schedules. It's also interesting to mention that Shenmue was considered to be the most expensive video game to produce at the time.
The first Shenmue game was a mystery-action game where players have to control Ryo, a martial artist who is seeking revenge on the person who killed his father. The game was considered to be so painstakingly detailed back then that it's a mystery how it can fare with the current games that can boast hundreds of hours of gameplay due how "open" the worlds are.
No official release date has been announced for Shenmue HD.
