Microsoft cancelled its deal with Platinum to develop Scalebound. The news has disappointed fans of the upcoming game.
Microsoft Announcement
The Windows Company issued a recent statement regarding Scalebound. It simply said that it's ending the production. Naturally, gaming fans were saddened by the announcement and are also curious as to what happen.
The Scalebound development was under the direction of Hideki Kamiya. He made a name for himself directing several famous games including Bayonetta. Scalebound was first announced on 2014 and has been yearly listed as one of the most awaited game titles. Unfortunately, the game was taking forever to finish which is probably the reason for Microsoft calling it quits. It was supposed to be an Xbox One and Windows 10 PC game for 2016. Its release date was later moved to 2017 until it was cancelled.
Heavy Platinum Workload
The development was hindered by a series of delays, according to Eurogamer. During its development, Platinum Games sat on the project for a month due to heavy workload. To complicate the matter, the game's engine was developing problems. Repairing it will require more time that they don't have since the project was already way past deadline.
Even if Microsoft cancelled the project, Platinum can still continue developing Scalebound if it wants to. The cancellation though can be seen as blow to Kiyami who created Scalebound. He had also been working on the game since 2006. His big break came when Microsoft made a deal to publish the game upon its completion. The official Scalebound video has been taken down but plenty of copies still remain online like this one.
