Microsoft's Lumia smartphones have been constantly on a discount for the longest time. This sparks the rumor that the said Windows phone series is already headed towards cancellation. However, seeing that these phones never go out of stock, it's hard to assess whether or not Lumia is indeed getting canceled.
Microsoft Lumia 435 Now For Only $28.75
The most recent Lumia phone put on sale is the Microsoft Lumia 435. It may be a two-year-old entry-level Lumia phone but it's still available to buy right now. If you buy from Walmart, you can even get it for as low as $28.75. That's approximately a $20 discount, which is quite a big deal for an already-affordable smartphone.
Considering the fact that the Lumia 435 originally had a price of $80, the roughly $30 price Walmart is selling it for is practically a good deal. It's worth noting though that the said Windows phone was given a permanent $50 price tag just a couple of months after its initial release. Phone Arena says that this phone did not reach the popularity level of the Lumia 520.
Microsoft Lumia Phones Restocked
While the rumors about Lumia's cancellation have flooded the web last year, it's still hard to figure out when this cancellation is going to take place, because apparently, a number of Lumia models have been restocked. Last week, ONMSFT has reported about new Lumia stocks being sold online. Apparently, the Lumia 640 XL (unlocked) was seen listed for $149 while the Lumia 950 was seen listed for as low as $298. The Lumia 950 XL, on the other hand, was listed for around $500.
With that said, it's still clear that the Lumia series is still present in today's market. Hence, it's still far from cancellation. Nevertheless, it wouldn't exactly be a surprise if it does get canceled soon enough. Considering the fact that no new Lumia device has been introduced for the longest time, it won't be a big shock if Microsoft eventually leaves the series for good.
Is The Lumia Dead Or Not?
Despite the Lumia phones being present in the current smartphone market, this may not exactly mean that the Lumia series is making a comeback. In fact, these Lumia devices may just be old inventory waiting to be all sold up. So unless an entirely new Lumia model is to be introduced, it's still safe to assume that the Lumia series is headed towards extinction.
Do take note that the next Microsoft device rumored to come out this year is no longer a Lumia. What's making headlines is the Surface Phone. This phone may still be as good as a rumor but it clearly says a lot about Microsoft's possible next steps. With the success of the Surface division, it won't be a surprise if the company's flagship smartphone would be developed under this department. We've seen the Surface Pro 4, Surface Book and Surface Studio succeed. There's no doubt that the Surface Phone if it does get released, would be just as successful.
