LGBT Population In America At An All Time High

LGBT population is on the rise in the U.S. According to Gallup poll, the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population rose from 3.5 percent in 2012 to 4.1 percent in 2016. According to the poll, the recent rise in the LGBT population is being spurred by millennials and the report also tells that around 8.3 million U.S. adults are identifying themselves as LGBT in 2012.

The Gallup poll interviews around 1.6 million adults daily. At the most recent result, adult people in the LGBT community now numbers around 10 million. The population of LGBT has increased by up to 7.3 in 2016 according to the Gallup poll. According to the poll, the number of women in LGBT is getting high. In 2012, around 3.5 percent of women identified as LGBT compared to 3.4 percent of men. In 2016, women who identified as LGBT was up to 4.4 percent as compared to 3.7 percent of men.

Gallup found out that the number of those who identified themselves are largely non-religious. The proportion of highly or moderately religious adults remained the same between 2012 and 2016 but increased from 5.3 to 7.0 percent among those who are not religious according to the poll according to a report by The News Recorder.

Americans greatly overestimate the number of openly gay and lesbian people. White Americans public estimates on average that 23 percent of Americans are lesbian or gay. The survey found that only 3.8 percent of the adult population is openly identified to the LGBT population.

The Centers for Disease Control in September 2016 reported that gay, lesbian and bisexual teens face more bullying and are also more likely to risky behaviors and violent-related behaviors including abuse of drugs, alcohol and some may consider suicide. The study found that students who engage in same sex relationships were more likely to use drugs, drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. According to the poll transgender people face more exploitation and bullying. They are also more prone to engaging in bad habits such as alcoholism and drug abuse as reported in an article by The Christian Post.
