Drinking Problem More Likely In Those Who Are Depressed

Depression can be devastating for many people. This could be more so for people who are drinking. Problem drinking is more likely in those who are depressed.

Drinking is being done by those who would want to escape from many issues. A study has found that people who have multiple chronic issues or depression are five times more likely to engage into problem drinking. Researchers from the University of Georgia have documented the connection between depression, multiple chronic illnesses and problem drinking.

Data from the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project has been used by the researchers from the University of Georgia School of Social Work. The data is a survey among people from age 57 to 85 who are known to be active alcohol drinkers. Among those surveyed, about 66 percent of problem drinkers are suffering from multiple chronic illness.

While many have multiple chronic illness, around 28 percent of problem drinkers also have depression. Problem drinking becomes even more likely if multiple chronic illness and depression go together. The study could help health care providers in handling older adults who are problem drinkers.

Orion Mowbray, lead author and an assistant professor the University of Georgia has said that the study could be used to effectively identify and help problem drinkers. Health care workers could also serve those who have issues with drinking with the study, according to UGA Today. Mowbray has observed that studies in the past have dealt with only one disease at a time.

Counseling and follow-up on cases of problem drinking can help, as Science Daily reports. Brief interventions could already have positive effects on those who have an issue with problem drinking. Intervention can include looking for any sign of depression among those who have problem drinking.
