The 2017 Mazda CX-9 and 2017 Ford Expedition are two of the most distinguished titans in the SUV segment. As the SUV demand continues to surge, the two titans clash for supremacy in the auto industry. Which of the two more deserves to be parked in your garage?

2017 Mazda CX-9 vs 2017 Ford Expedition: The Powertrains

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 is powered by a 2.4-liter Inline-4 Dynamic Pressure Turbo capable of putting out 250 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. This is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission that delivers the power through a standard front wheel drive (FWD) setting with an option for an all-wheel drive (AWD) configuration.

In comparison, the 2017 Ford Expedition is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that can crank out 365 horsepower. Similar to the 2017 Mazda CX-5, the 2017 Ford Expedition has a six-speed automatic transmission but the power is delivered through a rear wheel drive (RWD) and an optional AWD setting.

Typically, the more powerful a vehicle is, the more gas it consumes. And what the 2017 Mazda CX-9 lacks in power, it makes up in fuel economy. The 2017 Mazda CX-9 has a Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) fuel economy rating of 21/27/23 and 22/28/25 miles per gallon in the city, on the highway and combined for its FWD and AWD drivetrains respectively. The 2017 Ford Expedition on the other hand, has turned its power against it. It only has a rating of 15 and 21 miles per gallon driving in the city and on the highway respectively as reported.

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 has a lot to offer in terms of safety features. Reports state that 2017 Mazda CX-9 has i-ActiveSense system that features radar cruise control, lane keep assist, lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring. In addition, distance recognition support, adaptive front lighting, high beam control, forward obstruction warning and smart city brake support.

Unlike the 2017 Mazda CX-9, the 2017 Ford Expedition does not offer a lot in the aspect of active safety features. Reports state that rearview camera and rear parking assist along with blind spot monitoring are the only standard features for the 2017 Ford Expedition. Adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and lane keep assist are apparently not available in the 2017 Ford Expedition according to reports.

2017 Mazda CX-9 vs 2017 Ford Expedition: Where You Should Put Your Money On

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 is available in four trims from the base Sport followed by Touring, Grand Touring and signature with price tags of $31,520, $35,970, $40,170 and $44,015 respectively. Similarly, the 2017 Ford Expedition is also offered in four trims from the base XLT followed by, Limited, King Ranch and Platinum. The prices in comparison are significantly higher as it starts with $46,225, $55,370, $59,940 and $63,307 for the four trims respectively as reported.

As far as where you should put your money on is concerned, everyone has a different cup of tea and that means the choice is entirely up to you. Both the 2017 Mazda CX-9 and 2017 Ford Expedition offers a lot in their own way. But if one has to be chosen here and now, my money would be on the 2017 Mazda CX-9.
