High speed camera manufacturer Vision Research released a new professional video camera, the Phantom Flex4K. This high-speed digital camera is the latest addition to the Phantom product line and can shoot up to 1000 fps when set to 4090 x 2160, which is an aspect ratio of 16:9. Designed for quality digital cinematography at 4K resolution, the Phantom Flex4K provides a depth of field of super-35mm.
The Phantom Flex4K video camera has 64GB of internal recording memory, but for extended memory, a CineMag IV memory cartridge is available with a capacity of up to 2TB. You can get up to 2 hours of uncompressed raw codec. Shooting in the standard compressed format offers extended hours of digital footage.
With the Phantom Flex4K, for the first time, either raw or compressed digital files can be written right to the CineMag memory cartridge.
"The 1920 x 1080 image area on this sensor so happens to be exactly the same as Super 16. So then you can use all those common great Super 16 lenses and lightweight zooms and such. You'll have tons and tons of material and up to 2000 a second with that too so it's a really versatile system," AbelCine's Applications Specialist Mitch Gross said at NAB 2013.
Within the past 10 years, cinematographers have gravitated toward digital cameras, even for major Hollywood productions. Many notable movies were filmed using Phantom video cameras, including Sherlock Holmes (2009) and Tron: Legacy (2010), which filmed with the Phantom HD camera. Last year's film Gangster Squad was shot using the Phantom Flex.
The new Phantom Flex4K digital camera is available for pre-order or rental at AbelCine and orders are expected to ship in October.
