Samsung displayed its YOUM brand of flexible-display smartphone prototypes at the international CES earlier this year. The company definitely hinted about its plan to launch flexible display smartphones but did not announce a release date; however, a recent report suggests that LG has also joined the flexible display bandwagon and may launch a flexible screen smartphone ahead of Samsung.
"LG has also expanded to flexible displays, which can be twisted and bent and used for next-generation tablets and smartphones. In partnership with Korea's finance ministry, LG aims to ship its first batch of flexible displays later this year, also ahead of Samsung," reports Korea Times.
Even though Samsung has not announced its plans to bring out flexible screen devices, the prototypes presented at the International CES have captured the hearts of many smartphone enthusiasts.
Samsung has already launched the much-awaited Galaxy S4 smartphone, which does not have a flexible display but the Korean company still has more cards to play during the year, when it launches more smartphones. The highly-anticipated Galaxy Note 3 is also expected to launch during the latter part of the year, so the wait for smartphone buyers looking for a handset with a flexible display will continue in the hope that the Galaxy Note 3 has a flexible screen.
"This result is no surprise considering the company's stable client base, which we believe is very competitive. LG Display is also becoming aggressive in its new display technologies, such as flexible and OLED ones, prompting us to buy more LG shares," said Kim Il-tae, a senior fund manager at Taurus Investment & Securities in Seoul.
LG is trying to find a toehold in the smartphone space and a handset with a flexible screen will probably attract many customers and may fulfill the company's dream to become a key player in the market.
