Microsoft Office for iOS, Android, as well as Windows RT may still be in the distance, according to an alleged road map detailing the upcoming Gemini wave of Office updates Microsoft is rumored to be working on.
According to the leaked road map, Microsoft Office for iOS and Android is slated for an October 2014 release date, as part of Gemini wave 2.0.
The updates kick off this October with Gemini wave 1.0, which is a series of Windows Blue app updates, followed by Gemini wave 1.5 in April 2014. Gemini wave 1.5 will have refreshes for Microsoft Office for Mac, Office RT as well as Windows Phone, and will add Perceptive Pixel support for larger touchscreen devices.
ZDNet first broke the news of the alleged road map leak. It's important to note that the leaked road map does not indicate whether the Microsoft Office for iOS and Android apps are intended for tablets like iPad or smartphones like the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S4.
Microsoft has never confirmed or denied the app rumors, which have been circulating the interwebs for over a year. Most recently, speculation swirled that Microsoft Office for iOS and Android would be bundled with a subscription to Office 365, but the leaked roadmap does not allude to this.
As for the impending Gemini wave 1.0 series of updates, ZDNet notes that they are intended to supplement rather than replace the current generation of Office programs for desktop computers. The updates will be touch-centric and affect the four core programs in the Microsoft Office bundle: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote.
