Overage Fees And Home Broadband Data Caps Expanded By Internet Provider Cox

The internet provider Cox takes an approach similar to Comcast in city-by-city expansion of overage charges and internet data caps.

Cox's Home Internet Data Caps And Overage Fees

According to Ars Technica, Cox is continuing the trend of bringing overage fees and data caps to customers in new cities. After Comcast and Charter, Cox is the third largest cable company in the U.S. The internet provider has 6 million business and residential customers in 18 American states.

The company has instituted a 1 TB monthly data cap, much like Comcast. For each additional 50 GB block of data, Cox charges $10. Instead of deploying them to its entire territory all at once, also same as Comcast, Cox has been bringing the overage fees to several cities at a time.

NetForecast has been hired by Cox to test the accuracy of its internet meter. Cox customers can view their measured data use on the Cox website or in an app, the 1TB caps applying for download speeds from 5Mbps to 300Mbps. Cox offers in some areas a "Gigablast" fiber service that comes with gigabit upload and download speeds. For the gigabit fiber customers, a 2TB cap applies.

States Where Cox Expanded The Data Caps And Overage Fees

There are states where Cox hasn't yet started charging the overage fees, including Rhode Island, California, Arizona, Nevada, Louisiana, Virginia and Oklahoma. It is expected that Cox will keep expanding the caps, but at the moment it is still unknown when it will do so. According to The Verge, the data caps were brought by Cox first to Cleveland, Ohio. Florida and Georgia were following in October 2016.

According to company's website, Cox expanded the overage fees this week to Arkansas, Omaha, Kansas, Connecticut, Iowa, Nebraska, Idaho and Sun Valley. When they hit 85 percent, 100 percent, and 125 percent of their monthly data plans, customers can get data usage alerts from text message, e-mail, a browser or automated phone call..
