Consumers of smokeless tobacco are shocked to find fragments of metal, including a sharp metal object, inside the cans of their favorite smoke, resulting to the recall of the products . Consumers have called the manufacturers and alerted them of the foreign objects that they found. Due to the complaints, the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company (USSTC) voluntarily recalled the products of several of the major brands that sell nationwide.
The issue came to light after eight consumers complained to the makers regarding foreign metal objects that were found in the cans. Customers in Ohio, Indiana, Texas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Wisconsin are the first ones to call and make the complaints. Fortunately, none of the eight consumers who complained were injured by the metal fragments.
According to the U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, the objects were easily seen and so did not cause any accidental cuts. Manufactured in USSTC’s facility in Franklin Park, Illinois, the products unexplainably were mixed with the foreign objects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has already been notified of the situation and is working with federal authorities to investigate the matter, the Dayton Daily News reports.
Distributed nationally, the products are popular alternative for the usual tobacco stick. A list of the products affected by the recall has been released and it includes Copenhagen, Husky and Skoal brands. Majority of cans are discovered to be safe and without the metal objects, The Morning Call reports.
According to the company, the unaffected items include the Copenhagen Fine Cut in a fiberboard can, Copenhagen Long Cut in a fiberboard can and Copenhagen Long Cut Wintergreen in a plastic can. USSTC is currently telling wholesalers and retailers to remove the recalled products from their inventories. Sales representatives of the company are said to be assisting wholesalers and retailers in returning the affected smokeless tobacco cans.
