Twitter Music App Goes Live For All

The Twitter Music app has finally been released to the masses. Last week, the Twitter Music app made its A-List debut as Ryan Seacrest became possibly the most famous app beta-tester in the history of the world.

The American Idol judge tweeted last Thursday: "playing with @twitter's new music app (yes it's real!)... there's a serious dance party happening at idol right now."

The Twitter Music app, officially called Twitter #Music is both a Web platform and an iOS app, with an Android version coming soon. The app comes by way of a startup called We Are Hunted, which was acquired by Twitter last year. The way that the Twitter Music app works is fairly simple: it aggregates music from Rdio, Spotify and iTunes and leverages information from your Twitter follower graph to suggest pertinent tracks for you.

Your existing Spotify or Rdio account can be integrated directly into the Twitter Music app, allowing for full track playback. If you have neither of these services, you'll still be able to play a preview of the track using iTunes.

As several media outlets have observed, Twitter seems to be attempting to play to a new demographic with its latest app offering. While Ryan Seacrest obviously speaks to people of all ages, sexes and ethnic backgrounds, Twitter chose to hold the mainstream debut for Twitter #Music on Good Morning America, whose audience is a pretty far cry from the young, tech-savvy consumers the company traditionally targets with its offerings.

The Twitter Music app is on the iOS App Store right now, with 269 reviews as of 3:28 PM Thursday. It has a four-and-a-half star rating.
