Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 Hits FCC With AT&T Support

If you thought the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, with its 5.5-inch display, was a big smartphone, get ready for an even bigger phablet: the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 and its 6.3-inch display. The phablet has just hit the FCC and the filing reveals that the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 fully supports AT&T's HSPA+ network.

Samsung is covering every square inch imaginable when it comes to its phablet offerings. The Galaxy Note has a 5.3-inch display and the Galaxy Note 2 has a 5.5-inch screen. When Samsung announced the Galaxy Mega 6.3 it also announced the Galaxy Mega 5.8, and as the name implies, it features a 5.8-inch display. While it's great to see Samsung release all different display sizes to appeal to consumers, it also has the potential to hurt the company. The Galaxy Note phablet series has been a huge success for Samsung, but releasing the Galaxy Mega could cut into sales of its Galaxy Note line and risk cannibalization of its own smartphones, since it is basically the only major player in the phablet world. It's unclear if the U.S. will also get the Galaxy Mega 6.3's relatively smaller sibling, but if it happens you can rest assured we'll keep you updated.

Phablets have grown in popularity ever since Samsung released the original Galaxy Note with a 5.3-inch display in October 2011. Samsung followed up with the Galaxy Note 2, and went even bigger with its 5.5-inch display. It seems that consumers like the idea of converging a smartphone and tablet. Companies like Apple, Nokia and BlackBerry have taken notice and are all rumored to be working on phablets of their own.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 features a 6.3-inch PLS HD display, Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, 1.7GHz dual-core processor, 8GB or 16GB of internal memory, 1.5GB of RAM, 8-megapixel rear camera, 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera, 4G LTE radio available on one model, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0 H/S, GPS+GLONASS, NFC, 67.6 x 88 x 8.0 mm dimensions , 199g, microSD slot with support for up to 64GB cards and a Li-ion 3,200 mAh battery.

There is no word on when and if the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 will hit AT&T, but the fact that the phablet has passed through the FCC with support for the carrier likely means we should see the phablet being offered by the carrier sometime in the future.
