By now, everyone following PlayStation 4 news knows what the controller looks like. We know Sony is gunning for lots of social media integration and is trying to attract a wide variety of developers, big and small. But we don't know what the console itself will look like.
Many were surprised the PlayStation 4 console wasn't displayed. After all, when you think of a home console you usually picture the box alongside the controller. But to Sony, it was more important to showcase the company's philosophy behind the PS4 and its controller rather than just start tossing around hardware.
"I think it's [the PS4 controller] more relevant to what we were just talking about there, that the controller is a very important aspect of the physical design that influences the gameplay," Michael Denny, Sony's World Studios' vice president, saod to Edge. "So that's why it's more important for us to talk about the controller at that event because of course we wanted to talk about how we'd improved the DualShock 3 with tighter sticks, better triggers, cut-down latency and new features, with the touchpad, lightbar etcetera."
When Denny was asked about whether or not Sony has decided on a final design for the PS4 console, though, he hedged his answer and simply said it's going to look great.
"I'm not sure it's instructive for me to start trying to describe or talk about what I've seen or haven't seen in terms of the actual look of the box," he said. "But yeah, you know it's going to be another fantastic design and we can't wait to reveal it."
As for the PS4 price, Denny continued to echo Sony's recent line, saying that the company has learned from its experiences with the PS3, and it'll move to address any shortcomings.
"We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that's deep, connected, rich and immersive and is going to give a very focused and differentiated experience than anything else that's out there."
That makes it sound like the PS4 will be cheaper than its predecessors, but we might have to wait until E3 to find out for sure.
