Huawei Unveils A199, Ascend D2, Mate Follow-up

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei announced its A199 handset that offers some impressive specs. It comes right after Huawei introduced its Ascend flagship phones, the 5-inch Ascend D2 and its 6.1-inch Ascend Mate.

The A199 is exclusive to China Telecom and offers dual-SIM support, and also dual GSM/CDMA with 3G capabilities. The A199 sits right at the top with higher-end phones with its 1.5GHz quad-core processor. Huawei uses its own chipset in the A199, the Hass K3V2, and has 2GB of RAM. For internal memory, the A199 offers 8GB of storage and has a microSD slot to add up to 32GB of extra memory.

The 5-inch display on the A199 uses IPS technology and has a resolution of 1280 x 70 pixels. On the back is an 8MP camera, which is standard for most smartphones, and for video calls, a 1.3MP front facing camera. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean runs on the A199 and it's all powered by a 2150 mAh battery.

The A199 has specs that are identical to the Ascend P2, which was announced at Mobile World Congress. The Ascend P2 was announced as having a 13MP rear camera and a larger battery than the A199, at 2420 mAh. Last year Huawei announced its Emotion UI, which will overlap Android on the A199. The Emotion UI lets users customize the phone to their liking and relies on widgets to simplify functions and manage applications.

"Emotion UI is a reflection of Huawei's empathic design philosophy — built by consumers for consumers. In designing this user interface, we spoke to consumers to find out what they wanted from their smartphones, the type of experiences they sought when interacting with their devices and what we, as consumers ourselves, want from our smartphones," Global UI Design Director Huawei Dennis Poon said.
