Pete Hines, Bethesda marketing executive, said that Fallout 4 has got to be the most successful game the company has ever launched in the history of Bethesda’s history, more than Skyrim in terms of what the company did. Skyrim was released in November 2011 and sold more than 20 million copies. In November 2015, Fallout 4 shipped 12 million copies on launch day. With the release of the Special Edition remaster, Skyrim got a sales boost last year.
Hines responding to the critique that Fallout 4 did not do enough to set it apart from its predecessors, agreed that the game shares commonality with Fallout 3. He said that game sequel is a balancing act between retaining the core formula of the game and pushing forward. Hines stated that Sony’s Uncharted series feels the same.
He explained that if a gamer played Uncharted 4 and that was their first game, they would have a very different reaction to what the game is than for someone who have already played Uncharted 1, 2 and 3 because Uncharted 4 is more of 1,2 and 3.
Hines in a more recent interview has offered more insight on the comparison between Skyrim and Fallout 4. He tweeted that he was comparing Fallout 4 and Skyrim on the same period of time. Hines revealed that as a matter of fact, Fallout 4 has sold more copies than Skyrim. Fallout 4 has come to surpass The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to become Bethesda’s most successful game in the publisher’s history as reported by GameSpot.
Hines stated that the next game in the Fallout franchise may be different from the previous games. He said that whether it is Fallout or Elder Scrolls or whatever the company is going to do next, he thinks the mantra of the company will always be that they will step up their game as reported by DualShockers.
