Paeoniflorin Cure For Multiple Sclerosis? Traditional Medicinal Herb Sheds Promising Result

Long before, some experts believe that mainstream medicine does not guarantee a complete cure for the millions who suffer from crippling autoimmune conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis. In line with the said notion, Chinese scientists have discovered a broad spectrum of applications for those suffering from autoimmune disorders. One of which was the Paeoniflorin (PF), which is a herb component used in Chinese medicine. Paeoniflorin has recently shed light to the auto-immune disease as it has been found to have the ability to improve symptoms and reduce inflammation in a mouse model that recapitulates the human features of multiple sclerosis (MS).

Paeoniflorin And Its Properties

According to a report which was revealed by Multiple Sclerosis News Today, Paeoniflorin is noted as one of the principal bioactive components of the Paeonia lactiflora root, a commonly used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The researchers of the new study says that it has also been reported that PF exhibits multiple effects, such as anti-inflammation, immunoregulation, anti-arthritis, anti-hepatitis, pain-relieving, neuroprotection and anti-hyperglycemia. Furthermore, as of the press time, researchers have investigated the action of PF using an animal model for MS, the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model.

Study Proposition

Meanwhile, as per Scientific Reports, experts claim that Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is a well-established animal model that has been used for studying the underlying pathogenesis and developing new therapies for MS. Consequently, it was found that numerous reports have well studied the significant role of Th1 cells in EAE, however, abundant evidence demonstrate that Th17 cells are the main effector cells in the pathogenesis of EAE. And, as a mixture of various bioactive components, total glucosides of paeony (TGP) are extracted from the roots of Paeonia lactiflora and have been widely used as an anti-inflammatory remedy in the therapy for autoimmune diseases in Chinese medicine.

Ultimately, the experts said that their study provided insights into the role of PF as a unique therapeutic agent for the treatment of multiple sclerosis and illustrated the underlying mechanism of PF from a new perspective. The researchers involved in the study have also claimed that PF treatment can effectively improve the clinical symptoms and delay the disease onset in EAE.
