Scubo 3D iPhone Case Hands-On Review: 3D Photos, Videos — No Glasses Required

One of the great things about working for iTech Post is that we get to try out some of the latest and greatest devices and accessories. I received a Scubo 3D View Case for the iPhone 5 while attending the TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013 event. I was very impressed by the demo by Conor Donnelly, chief marketing officer for Scubo.

Donnelly was kind enough to hook me up with a review unit so I could test it out and share what it's like viewing things in 3D and taking 3D pictures on an iPhone 5. The case consists of three main pieces: a back case, a screen insert that provides 3D viewing and snap-on case that also holds the 3D screen insert in place. The cool part of this setup is that Scubo includes a cutout on the back of the case to store the 3D viewer, so you can swap in and out of 3D whenever you feel like it. The company also includes an iPhone screen cover in the box, a nice way to help people protect their iPhones.

The Scubo 3D Viewer case is made out of plastic and feels very durable. I found the volume and the mute switch to be a little tough to access. This was probably due to it being an early unit, as the company currently offers the case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. I was told that the case would be available to the public soon for the iPhone 5.

In order to use the 3D features of the case you'll need to download the free Scubo app from the Apple App Store. Inside the app you'll be able to:

"Capture, edit and view your own 3D photos on your iPhone or Smart TV. The Scubo Social Network also allows you to share your photos online and enjoy 3D content from your fellow Scubo users. "

Scubo uses Parallax technology in its 3D software and screen overlay. It allows what Scubo describes as:

"Thanks to Parallax technology, you will be able to view 3D photos and videos anywhere and anytime without the use of glasses. Scubo provides a whole new dimension to explore on your retina screen."

I found that images in the app, if held from a distance as Scubo instructs, did appear to have a 3D-like quality to them. It is very reminiscent of the Nintendo 3DS series. As far as 3D pictures and video, it works and looks 3D-ish. Unfortunately you can only share pictures to other Scubo users and wirelessly to a 3D TV via DLNA, or look through it on your iPhone via the app. It's a cool case and app that lets you make some interesting images and video, and it will hopefully be updated to make sharable images via messaging, email and more.

It's a fun way to add a new ability to your iPhone. 3D images and videos look pretty good using this case and you don't have to wear ridiculous glasses. The Scubo 3D Viewer Case costs 24.95 € or under $40 USD.
