With this, co-executive producer Matthew B. Roberts revealed the real reason behind all the situation.
'Outlander' Season 3 Delayed; Fans Ask For The Real Reason
As per Movie News Guide, the release date for the show's second season was July 2016. Fans are expecting that the upcoming installment would be close to the said date. However, they were really disappointed when the Starz network already confirmed that "Outlander" Season 3 would air this September 2017. With all fans disappointed of what happened, Matthew B. Roberts shared the real cause of the delay.
Roberts pointed out that he was misquoted of his promise that a short "Droughtlander" would come after the season 2 finale. A statement was given directly to Roberts on Twitter, saying, "Unfortunately a lot of fans held on to your quote after season two ended. Never thought it would be that early but many did."
He immediately responded to the said post, saying, "As I said, I was misquoted. So... it wasn't technically my quote."
He also admitted that the show would be having a hard time if it would be pushed through in a nearer date. To add on this, the location was also one of the great indicators why the TV series should be delayed. Robert admitted that everything should be done in Scotland before they would go through another base.

On the other hand, author Diana Gabaldon already shared her sentiments regarding the delay of the show and the disappointment of the fans. She jokingly stated on her Twitter account: "Haha! Try making them wait four years for a book.."
