It has been 10 years since Mel Gibson last trodden behind a camera to direct a peculiar film. After keeping a decent status for the past decade after the stage was covered, Gibson was welcomed back to the Hollywood with an Oscar nomination.
Gibson Was Very Excited To Have "Hacksaw Ridge"
It was two decades ago that Gibson won two Oscars, for directing and producing "Braveheart." This year, it will be "Hacksaw Ridge" that brought him to the Oscar party. Producers come up to Gibson three times over a 10-year period to direct the movie.
"When I was reading it, I mean, it kind of just steps up and smacks you in the face and says, 'Hey, direct me!" said Gibson. "So, I don't know, it marks off all my boxes. I'm reading, like, yes! Yes! oh yeah, yeah. It's a bit clichéd. Then tears dropped on the pages and it got me. So, I believed if it can do that to me, and I'm cold-hearted guy, I could maybe tell the story and feel the same things," he continued.
Gibson said he made "Hacksaw Ridge" as an Indi-film without the extravagance of an uptight budget, but he received the help of another country.
Australia With Arms Wide Open Invites Gibson To Film There
"Australia comes to the party," said Gibson. "I mean, they said, 'You bring it here, we'll do all the filming here.' It's a completely Australian film. You use the elements and the government, the Australian film board and the whole thing helped us a lot so that we were able to accomplish a lot without much."
As for the leeway of Gibson actually winning the Oscar after slumber? He said he wouldn't be going to Las Vegas any moment soon. "I checked the odds in Vegas, just for my own inquisitiveness," joked Gibson. "For best picture, 66 to 1, so that's great! I don't want to make speeches!"
