Square Enix is mixing up the Final Fantasy VII Remake as it will feature both new and old mechanics. Here is a deeper analysis of the combat system stemming from the information the company has shared.
Square Enix Shares Two Vital Images
According to Shack News, Square Enix has released two new pictures of the upcoming remake. One of these images come from the very first boss fight in the game wherein Cloud and Barret battle the Guard Scorpion in the Mako Reactor. On the other hand, the second picture shows Cloud hiding behind some boxes as Shinra soldiers are firing at him.
In line with this, the first picture shows off a good amount of the potential battle system Square Enix is trying to do. While many things are still subject to change, fans can get a good idea of what to expect during combat. Side Arc shares various details from the menu down to some seemingly special attacks that characters can do.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Has a Real-Time Battle System
To begin with, there is an ATB mechanic which can store up to three levels of bars. Notably, there is a triangle button prompt next to the ATB bar which can activate a skill if players can manage to save enough bars. Moreover, there is Japanese text next to the triangle button which roughly translates to "Intense cutting attack."
Judging from previous trails, the bars fill up as characters attack and decrease when they stay idle. With this in mind, it is implied that the bars can unleash some sort of powerful attack or combo finishers. Moreover, the fact that the bar decreases means that the action is indeed real-time as game director Tetsuya Nomura has noted in the past.
On a different note, it also seems like grenades will not have any effect on allies and that some of the scenery is destructible. Overall, the basic combat will most likely revolve around one "attack" button with other buttons activating some sort of special attacks or even limit breaks. For now, fans will have to wait for further news regarding the Final Fantasy VII combat and mechanics.
