Nokia is looking to win the battle for the best smartphone camera with its Nokia Lumia 928, teasing the new smartphone's capabilities with a YouTube comparison video. The video, titled "The Hurricane," apparently compares image quality between the Nokia Lumia 928, the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S3.
The video's trip around the roller coaster tracks shows the Lumia 928 capturing better color and sharper images when recording video than with either the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S3. Nokia attributes the superior performance on its stabilization technology - which actually allows the camera to move independent of the phone - and the camera's better low-light performance.
The Lumia 928's rear-facing camera is rumored to feature an 8.7 megapixel PureView camera, optical image stabilization and Carl Zeiss optics just like the Nokia Lumia 920, according to TechCrunch.
The video, recorded at Adventureland in Farmingdale, New York, was produced by Nokia, and ought to be approached with a skeptical eye when it comes to a real-world comparison. Noticeably missing from the comparison video is Samsung's latest phone, the Galaxy S4, which totes a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera.
But, as ITPro Portal, notes, Nokia has previously faked promotional videos supposedly shot by its Lumia 920 and 820 phones. In the promotional videos for those phones, The Verge found a professional camera crew had shot the videos, which were allegedly showcasing the Lumia's stabilization features. Nokia has since apologized for the misleading videos.
Nokia has yet to formally announce the Lumia 928, but, as with previous campaigns, its has already started advertising the phone through various means. Last week, Nokia bought a two-page spread in Vanity Fair, along with a new website naming the Lumia 928 in its URL address and bought a billboard for the unannounced phone.
The Nokia Lumia 928 is believed to feature a 1.5 gigahertz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 4.5-inch PureMotion HD+ display, a Xenon flash to accompany its 8.7 megapixel camera, 2GB of RAM, Windows Phone 8 operating system, a wireless charging system and three colors.
Nokia is expected to formally announce the Lumia 928 during a press event in London, on May 14.
