Star Trek: Into Darkness actress, Zoe Saldana revealed new information about the anticipated sequel to 2009's Avatar. Director James Cameron is currently putting the final touches on the script according Saldana and filming is scheduled to start next year.
Saldana just signed on to play a green assassin in an upcoming superhero movie from Marvel called Guardians of the Galaxy. Directed by James Gunn, production starts in a few weeks for an August 2014 release date. In a recent interview with MTV News as part of her promotional tour for Star Trek: Into Darkness, Saldana said that she and Cameron have been in touch and discussed Avatar 2 and 3.
"I know that he's sort of been removing himself from things that might distract him so that he can focus on doing the final tweaks on the scripts. He did share that he's in a very interesting and fragile place, because the story is dictating itself," Saldana said. "You walk a fine line when you're the creator of the story you're going to tell, of the manipulation that you may have unconsciously of the story and the characters versus allowing the story to unfold itself because you did create such a monumental and solid platform that they're just living and breathing organisms and they're the ones that need to make their own decisions," Saldana said before admitting that she was "geek talking".
Cameron always said writing was the hardest part of moviemaking.
"It's a little bit of a daunting writing task because it's two scripts and they've both gotta be done at the same time. I'm writing it as separate stories that have an overall arc inclusive of the first film," Cameron said of Avatar 2 and 3.
Saldana is part of two major movie franchises and is reprising her role as lieutenant Uhura in Star Trek: Into Darkness. Paramount recently pushed up the release date of the film, now scheduled for May 16. We'll see Saldana returning to her role as Neytiri in both Avatar 2 and 3, which the actress suggested will be filmed at the same time. Saldana dropped this piece of information in a recent visit to the Jonathan Ross Show.
The 34-year old actress explained that the filming process takes a while so it would be best to film Avatar 2 and 3 together.
"Because if we just do two and then wait, I'll probably be 45 or 50 by the time we get to part three. It takes a long time, it's a very hard process when you shoot motion capture," Saldana said.
The production progress of Avatar 2 and 3 appear to be going according to schedule, the scripts are being finalized and filming starts in early 2014. Avatar 2 is scheduled for a 2015 release date, which is just what director James Cameron planned for.
