Despite the fact that Sony and Microsoft are releasing the PS4 and Xbox 720 later this year, many video game watchers expect traditional consoles to face some stiff competition from the mobile gaming field.
The proliferation of smartphones and tablets has caused many people to shift their gaming habits. Cheap, one dollar games undoubtedly helped. What can the PS4 and Xbox 720 bring to the table to counter that?
According to Q-Games President Dylan Cuthbert, he's hoping that the new Sony and Microsoft consoles make people interested in traditional video games again.
"I'm hoping there will be a resurgence in core gaming," he said to Siliconera. "People getting into games for the sake of them being games. Not just like Call of Duty or that kind of core gaming. Like, interesting concepts that are made into games that can sell at a higher price than a dollar."
He added that while there's a lot of innovation on devices like the iPhone, the problem is that people expect these games to be sold for a buck. It's very hard for developers to actually make money off of titles like that, and he wants the PS4 and Xbox 720 to change that situation.
Of course, for that to happen, the new game systems will need to offer more than the same kinds of titles they're pushing out now. Cuthbert is confident they will, though.
"In a year or two you will see this massive push on the graphics side and you'll see things you never seen before," he said.
After it was noted that that's only on the visual side, Cuthbert said that it will still help on the gameplay side.
"That encourages ideas in gameplay," he said. "It's one of the things, I'm not saying it's the only thing. All things encourage gameplay. Art. I mean you've seen the IGF; art is definitely influencing a lot. The thing about graphics is, if you can do even more with the graphics, you can do even more art if you're clever enough with it, and if you have a good artistic sense. It just lets you get away with more. I'm not talking about ultra-realistic graphics."
