Gaming fans have been waiting for over a year for the new video game console from Microsoft - the Xbox Project Scorpio. Just a few days ago, the world finally got to know some of the details about the highly-anticipated Xbox Scorpio. This time, a leak shows what it looks like.
Gamasutra had an opportunity to chat with Xbox head Phil Spencer and take photographs of Project Scorpio's development kit which may or may not end up as the official design of the eagerly awaited follow-up to the Xbox One S. Speaking of, the leaked image looked a lot like the Xbox One S. It has a white upper half with five round buttons on the left and the Xbox logo on the right corner. The black lower portion seems to have three ports on the right side. One of the images showed the Project Scorpio dev kit sitting in front of some of Microsoft's previous dev kits.
Gamasutra also learned in that the company is serious about compatibility. It believes developers should think beyond the current console's configurations in creating games. Sony has already done so with the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox intends to follow their lead with the Xbox Scorpio.
As IGN reported, the Xbox Scorpio will also have 4K gaming. Spencer explained that the company foresaw the success of 4K TVs which is one reason why it simultaneously worked on a couple of consoles with 4K capability. The development of the 2016 4K console was discontinued due to potential issues with pricing in accordance with the hardware's power. Instead, Microsoft focused all their energies on the 2017 console.
The recent big reveal of the Xbox Scorpio's major features courtesy of Eurogamer's Digital Foundry-backed up Spencer's claim that it will be the most powerful console ever. One of the Xbox Scorpio's most impressive features is its six teraflops of power which was made possible by customized GPU.
Spencer did not indicate during the interviews what the official name and the price of project Scorpio would be. The Microsoft Xbox Project Scorpio is expected later in the year.
