Windows 10 S: What You Need to Know About Microsoft's Answer To Chrome OS

Google's very own Chromebook has become so good that when it comes to price and quality, this laptop is leading. With that said, Microsoft needs a lightweight operating system to compete. While hoping for the educationally focused gadgets, Microsoft recently introduced the Windows 10 S that will take on to Chrome OS. Here is the rundown of what you need to know about the new Windows 10 S.

What Is Windows 10 S?

Windows 10 S is the new Microsoft’s lightweight operating system. It is cheaper and less processor intensive compared to the existing Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro, which is the versions of the OS found on almost all PC nowadays. As reported by Gizmodo, Windows 10 S is a lightweight OS because there are far fewer programs operating in the background. Microsoft claimed that a laptop running Windows 10 S loads a user profile 15 seconds quicker than the same laptop model running Windows 10 Pro.

Is Windows 10 S Efficient Enough?

Windows 10 S is Microsoft's answer to Chrome OS in the education market. Therefore, if someone from a school or work at a school, this new OS is a big deal because Windows 10 S can make it easy to standardize computer use across the whole campus. It is a stripped-back, education-oriented translation of the operating system that provides some app support in the repute of simplicity and performance.

According to The Verge, Windows 10 S is specially packaged and listed in the Microsoft Windows Store. “Everything that runs on Windows 10 S is downloaded from the Windows Store,” Microsoft’s Windows chief Terry Myerson said while demonstration the new OS. Myerson also showed off the ability of Windows 10 S to support peripherals and accessories just like regular in Windows 10.

Windows Store apps run in a relatively safe box where malware and other threats or virus aren't likely to be an issue. That simply means schools don't have to worry on the vulnerabilities that may come with running any old Windows app. In addition to that, Windows 10 S has the ability to set up PCs using a USB drive with preconfigured options by detecting the key and customize its settings.

When Will Windows 10 S Be Available?

Aside from Microsoft wants to take on Google, the firm said they are really aiming for their new product to be great especially in the education market. In fact, its goal with the new Windows 10 S is to have a wide range of PC partners producing computers that run this Windows 10 variant. Windows 10 S will be ready in the summer and PCs shipping with the new OS will start at prices as low as $189.
