White Nexus 4 is official, will hit the shelves on May 29

LG has finally taken the wraps off its heavily-rumored white variant of the Nexus 4 smartphone. The 4.7-inch smartphone in its all-new white avatar is set to hit the shelves on Wednesday, May 29.

The white Nexus 4 will start retailing in Hong Kong from today and "will roll out globally in select markets in Asia, North America, Europe and the Middle East over the next several weeks," LG said.

Speculations surrounding the release of a white version of the Nexus 4 started surfacing online in Nov. 2012 itself, around the time the black variant of the smartphone was launched.

In April, hands-on images of the white Nexus 4 popped up online, fueling speculations that Google would release the smartphone at its Google I/O 2013 event in May.

While the white Nexus 4 gave the Google I/O a miss, the much awaited white version's release continued to be debated. Last week, a set of press images of the white Nexus 4 leaked online and once again had the rumor mills murmuring that the official launch was closer than we thought.

"Nexus 4 set the standard for Android 4.2 Jelly Bean smartphones," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. "Nexus 4 White delivers the same Google experience to consumers in a stylish and attractive color option."

Apart from a lick of paint, the white Nexus 4 packs the same features under the hood as the black model. The Nexus 4 touts a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display with a 1280 x 768 pixels resolution (320 ppi). A Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz powers the smartohone.

The Nexus 4 also sports an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing one and 2GB of RAM. The Android-powered smartphone is fueled by a 2100mAh battery, which offers support for up to 15 hours (on 3G).

Rumors were rife that the white Nexus 4 would feature a newer version of Android; however, the smartphone runs on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean.

The black variant of the Nexus 4 sold out on the Google Play Store within hours of release in both the U.S. and the UK. We wonder if the white Nexus 4 will repeat the performance once it is made available in these regions in the next couple of weeks.
