Nintendo is trying a new strategy in the market wherein they will sell physical game boxes that do not have the cartridge inside. Instead, players will have to use another way to get their game.
Physical And Digital Games
Digital downloads in video games are slowly taking over the market with the high-speed internet becoming more universal. Players have grown accustomed to the idea of buying credit or using cards to buy games from the digital store instead of having to go to their nearest retailer. In spite of this, there are still many consoles players still buying physical games for the growing collection.
Nintendo Explores Another Packaging Option
Strangely enough, BGR reports that Nintendo is trying to create a middle ground in the market that appeals to both types of gamers. In line with this, they will try and sell physical boxes of the game without the actual cartridge that players insert into their console. Instead, there will be a code that players must use in the eShop to download their game.
Kotaku shares that this option will be available in Japan for the upcoming Splatoon 2. Nintendo explained that this version is recommended for players who want to keep the box but not the cartridge itself. Fittingly enough, most gamers nowadays only collect physical games to show off their stunning collection of boxes.
However, there are some problems when it comes to physical cartridges as they can become damaged or lost. Digital games are tied to an account and can be redownloaded or deleted. This method only seems to be an experiment, and it is unsure if Nintendo plans on doing this for other upcoming titles.
Fans abroad will have to wait for further news if the company does the same thing for the western release of Splatoon 2. The game officially launches on July for the Nintendo Switch.
