The OnePlus 5 looks great from the outside despite accusations of being a copycat. Inside is a slightly different story.
The OnePlus 5 was subjected to a teardown and it was discovered that the flagship killer could have used more glue. The MyFixGuide teardown showed that the camera modules were a bit loose. The person performing the teardown indicated that OnePlus could have used adhesive on the camera modules to prevent it from being dislodged. Some of the connectors inside the OnePlus 5 were also not fixed with metal plates so there'll always be the possibility that the parts could loosen.
On a positive note, Android Headlines pointed out that the OnePlus 5 is easily repairable except for the front half which is glued to the screen. Repairs on this part will require the use of a heat gun which can go either way depending on the D-I-Y repairers' experience. The rest of the insides of the OnePlus 5 can easily be screwed and unscrewed making repairs a breeze.
GSMArena also noted that the OnePlus 5 is generally a solidly built smartphone despite the weak spots. OnePlus used a "strict sealing design" and a "thickening process" similar to what Apple, Samsung, Oppo and Vivo employ.
Despite the hype and high-end specifications, the OnePlus 5 has had its share of controversies in the short time since its launch. Aside from the aforementioned weak spots inside the device, there are a few other controversies surrounding the OnePlus 5. First, there's the issue of the design. The back of the OnePlus 5 is strikingly similar with that of the iPhone 7 Plus. It's understandable to say that the design of the OnePlus 5 was inspired by the iPhone but it could've avoided any brouhaha if OnePlus at least altered it a bit. Issues aside, the OnePlus 5 looks great simply because the iPhone 7 plus looks great as well.
Another problem recently discovered with the OnePlus 5 is its camera. Before its launch, OnePlus was promoting its dual camera as one of the highlights of the handset. Aside from the possibility of being dislodged due to the lack of adhesive that puts the camera in place, those who got to test out the OnePlus 5 cameras were not that impressed with the photos.
Perhaps one of the more embarrassing issues with OnePlus is the fact that it was caught cheating. This is the third time that the company was accused of manipulating the benchmark scores of its products. It did so with the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T after which the company promised not to do so again. However, it was recently learned that the company cheated on the benchmark test for the OnePlus 5.
