Is the Aston Martin Rapide wagon going into production?

It looks like hatchback enthusiasts may be in for a special treat from the folks over at Aston Martin. After Bertone teased a special one-off Jet 2+2 based on the Rapide at the Geneva Motor Show back in March, enthusiasts have made their desire for the wagon known and it looks like the carmaker might have listened.

According to new reports, Aston Martin and Bertone are in talks to discuss the possibility of a limited-edition production run of a Rapide wagon. The wagon would be based on the Rapide and might carry the name Aston Martin Rapide Shooting Brake. The seating arrangement will probably remain the same way it was crafted for the one-off, which is to say a 2+2 arrangement.

It's not known at this point whether the resulting vehicle would be called an Aston Martin or Bertone, but both companies are reportedly eager to see the project get underway. Aston Martin does not always build its own vehicles. The Rapide, for example, was produced by Magna Steyr before Aston Martin chose to bring production in-house.

Autocar had first reported the news. The news outlet states that talks are still underway between Aston Martin and Bertone. It's unknown what the Rapide wagon might cost if it does indeed go into production, but according to Autocar, it would likely sit near the top of Aston Martin's range.

As CarBuzz points out, if the carmaker intends to produce 10 or less Rapide wagons, it's likely that Bertone would get the contract. Anything larger than that and it becomes more likely that Aston Martin will handle the production itself.

Aston Martin has yet to announce anything officially and the project would certainly face a couple obstacles if it were to go into production. For one thing, it's possible that the collector who commissioned the original Rapide 2+2 would need to be compensated should Aston Martin and Bertone decide to take his specifications and wagons to sell to the mass market.
