Apple prepping to release 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch iPhones in 2014?

Apple is apparently looking to release the iPhone with bigger displays in a bid to give competition to the current line-up of Android-powered smartphones. The company is allegedly considering the 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch screen sizes for the iPhone and may launch the new handsets in 2014.

What's more, Apple is believed to be determining the usability of these phones and is also supposedly exploring the cheaper iPhone option in more colors, alongside the bigger screen versions.

The latest information is courtesy four reliable sources "with knowledge of the matter" who have spilled the beans to Reuters.

According to a Reuters report, "Apple Inc is exploring launching iPhones with bigger screens, as well as cheaper models in a range of colors, over the next year, said four people with knowledge of the matter, as it takes a cue from rival Samsung Electronics."

The report further added that "Apple is looking at introducing at least two bigger iPhones next year - one with a 4.7-inch screen and one with a 5.7-inch screen - said the sources, including those in the supply chain in Asia. They said suppliers have been approached with plans for the larger screens, but noted it is still unclear whether Apple will actually launch its flagship product in the larger sizes."

Previously, market observers have opined that Apple is working on a more affordable iPhone in multiple hues, as well as the bigger display variants.

However, at this juncture it is not certain that Apple will stick to the purported sizes. A source let on that "constantly change product specifications almost to the final moment, so you're not really sure whether this is the final prototype."

Apparently, trial production for both the iPhone 5S and cheaper iPhone is slated to begin next month "with mass production ramping up in August to meet a September launch target."

"Trial production was originally planned to start in June, but the mixing of colors is taking longer than expected as Apple has very high and idealistic standards," notes one source.

However, as far as the cheaper iPhone is concerned, it could have a $99 price tag and its release "could slip to next year" per one of the sources.
