Microsoft has finally begun rolling out the GDR 2 update for Windows Phone 8 powered smartphones. However, the update is being pushed out for non-Nokia devices, namely the HTC 8X and Samsung ATIV S.
Earlier in June, we reported that Microsoft was gearing up to push out the much-awaited Windows Phone GDR2 update in July. The information was courtesy of Australian carrier Telstra, who had list of updates for the devices it offered. The list revealed that Nokia's Lumia 920 was slated to receive the GDR2 update on July 8 and the Lumia 520, HTC 8X and HTC 8S were to follow suit a week later on July 15.
Now per reports, the HTC 8X and Samsung ATIV S are both receiving the GDR2 software update. The software update is an over-the-air (OTA) one and can also be downloaded via the Windows Phone desktop software.
"We received the first reports from some readers that their Samsung ATIV S has (branding free) get a Windows Phone update. Although we also own such a device without branding, but this was no update, suggesting that the phased rollout takes place, as it is the rule," reports German website WParea.de.
The GDR2 update for the HTC 8X apparently began rolling out in the Netherlands first per reports.
"Windows Phone Central has begun to receive reports from users that their HTC 8X (UK Virgin Mobile and non-branded) are receiving updates today. The update, most likely a combo of firmware and the coveted GDR2 OS update (build 10327), will enable things like FM Radio, Data Sense (carrier dependent) and other improvements," notes a WPCentral report.
If you own either of the smartphones you can check if you've received the update by navigating to the "Phone Update" option in the Settings menu.
Interestingly, the update is yet to make its way to Nokia's WP8-powered smartphones as the Finnish company is expected to push out its own Amber update sometime in August. Other non-Nokia WP8-powered handsets will likely receive the update later this month.
Some of the features the latest Windows Phone update brings include HTML5 improvements, FM Radio, a new Data Sense feature, VoIP apps like Skype and Lync have improved stability and performance.
The GDR2 update is a minor one but with Microsoft slated to push out the GDR3 software update (also known as Windows Phone Blue), WP8 devices will get significant feature improvements and updates, including a new notification center, improved multi-tasking and more.
