Samsung's best-selling Galaxy Note 2 is allegedly slated to get a "newer version of Android," likely Android 4.3, and not the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update. The latest information is courtesy of Australian carrier Telstra and reconfirms a recent report which suggested the same.
Moreover, Telstra also reveals that the Lumia 920 will be getting the GDR2 update on Aug. 14.
A few days ago, we reported that Samsung's Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 were apparently set to skip the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update and directly jump to Android 4.3.
Now Telstra has reiterated the previous rumors and the carrier reveals that it is Samsung which has decided to push out the update to the Galaxy Note 2 smartphone. Moreover, the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean software update will be pushed out to Galaxy Note 2 smartphones globally.
"Samsung have elected globally to skip the 4.2.2 update for this device and will instead go to a newer version of Android. No schedule has been provided for this update," reads Telstra's post on its support page.
Samsung's move to bypass the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update and leapfrog to Android 4.3 seems plausible, especially since Google's latest software release seems to be round the corner. Google is expected to unveil Android 4.3 next week at its media event.
Even though Samsung is yet to officially announce the direct jump to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean for its Galaxy Note 2, it would not come as a surprise if the Korean company chooses to take this route for certain devices in its portfolio.
By skipping Android 4.2.2 and pushing out Android 4.3 instead, Samsung would be able to put its efforts into getting Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie (whenever it launches) on board its devices faster.
Telstra's update list also reveals the software release status for several other smartphones, including the Windows Phone 8 powered Nokia Lumia 920. The handset is expected to receive the much-awaited GDR2 update in August (customer availability date being Aug. 14) and is currently in the first round of testing.
"Test submission received 12 July and currently in test," notes Telstra.
Other WP8 powered handsets like the HTC8X and HTC 8S are anticipated to receive the update on Aug. 7 and Aug. 21, respectively.
With Samsung expected to announce the Galaxy Note 3 at the IFA in September this year, fans will welcome the news that the predecessor Galaxy Note 2 will get a flavor of the impending Android 4.3 OS.
