Tesla with Apple CarPlay is now possible thanks to a new workaround that utilized Raspberry Pi.
Tesla and Apple CarPlay
Owners of Tesla EVs have yet to officially get the iOS-like infotainment system of the Cupertino tech giant, but a new workaround makes Apple Carplay available on their vehicles.
As per a news story by MacRumors, the giant EV maker of the tech billionaire Elon Musk has been asked by numerous customers to add CarPlay to its vehicles. But it appears that the carmaker remains deaf to their plea.
As such, a Poland-based developer, Michał Gapiński, went the extra mile to bring the much-awaited Apple CarPlay support to Tesla vehicles.
In fact, the Polish dev has already showcased the Tesla Apple CarPlay support for the Tesla Model 3 sedan earlier this year.
Apple CarPlay on Tesla EVs?
This time around, the workaround for the Apple CarPlay support on Tesla vehicles is already available for download to the public.
According to a recent report by Tesla North, the Polish dev has been working on the workaround to bring the in-car system of Apple to Tesla EVs for six months or roughly half a year.
The developer told the auto media outlet that the first release of the "Tesla Android," which brings Apple CarPlay support, is now available for download to the public.
Ergo, Tesla owners who want to try out the in-car infotainment system of the iPhone maker could now download the workaround.
The new workaround that goes by the name "Tesla Android" utilizes a Raspberry Pi, a Wi-Fi access point, and an LTE modem. It also requires an Ethernet cable and a micro-HDMI to HDMI cord.
Aside from these peripherals, the most essential part of the workaround is the customer Android-based firmware, which brings the iOS-like in-car system.
The installation of the Tesla Android on the infotainment system of the EVs of the Musk-led automaker allows its users to run the Apple CarPlay
On top of that, the custom Android firmware also gives Tesla owners an option to run the ScanMyTesla app, which provides vehicle logs.
Apple CarPlay: What it Brings
Tesla North highlighted in its story that one of the most requested features of Tesla vehicle owners is two Apple products, namely Apple CarPlay and its music streaming platform, Apple Music.
CarPlay, the iOS-like in-car system, is readily available on various vehicles out there, bringing iPhone integration features. It includes the virtual assistant of Apple, Siri, as well as its built-in apps like Apple Music and Apple Maps.
