Apple Analyst Says TSMC Will Start “M2 Pro” Chip Mass Production Later This Year

Expect the M2 Pro chips to be available soon as Apple analyst Jeff Pu of Haitong Intl Tech Research reported that that Apple supplier TSMC will start the mass production of the powerful chip later this year.

Specifically created for Mac and iPad, M2 Pro chip is the first upgrade to the Apple Silicon chips. After Apple revealed the new M2 Pro chip, TSMC, the Taiwanese semiconductor company, will start manufacturing the chips in greater quantities, according to Tech Times.

TSMC to Start Mass Producing M2 Pro

According to 9to5Mac, Pu's research revealed that Apple will continue working with TSMC as its Apple Silicon chip supplier.

It is expected that the Taiwanese semiconductor company will start mass producing Apple's new "M2 Pro" chip later this year. The M2 Pro chip will reportedly be built on the 3-nanometer process.

For those who are not familiar with chips, "the scale of a chip in nanometer represents the distance between its transistors, which means the smaller the distance, the better the performance," according to 9to5Mac.

Built on the same 5-nanometer process as M1, the new Apple Silicon M2 chip has a number of enhancements,.

According to Apple, the M2 has 18% faster CPU performance than the M1. Along with it is the 35% better graphics. This is due to the new 10-core GPU.

While M1 is only available with 8GB and 16GB of RAM, M2 can be maximized up to 24GB of RAM.

According to 9to5Mac, they learned earlier this year from sources that "Apple has been working on a new Mac mini with the M2 Pro chip." The company has also been developing an even more powerful chips. The new chip is for the most-awaited Apple Silicon Mac Pro.

If Pu's report is correct, the "high-end versions of the M2 chip will all be built on the 3-nanometer process," according to 9to5Mac.

M2 Pro to Power Redesigned MacBook Pro Family

Although the mass production of M2 Pro chop will commence later this year, it is unlikely that we will witness new products with next generation Apple Silicon soon.

The updated versions of the redesigned MacBook Pro family will likely be the first products to be powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max. And this could happen in 2023.

In case you are unfamiliar, the M1 Pro and M1 Max powered the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro series. It is expected that the M2 Pro and M2 Max will provide an increase in CPU and GPU cores.

Previous report stated that the M2 Max could be geared with up to a 12-core GPU and 38-core GPU. On the other hand, M1 Max can currently be maximized up to 10-core CPU and 32-core configuration, according to WCCFTech.

While consumers are excited that TSMC's 3nm technology could also be used in the A16 Bionic that will be found in the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, this is unlikely to happen as the production of 3nm chips will commence in Q4 of 2022 but the A16 Bionic need to be prepared by July.
