Twitter is allowing anyone to use its conversation-leaving feature. The "unmention" function of the social media platform will now be accessible to all users, the company revealed.

You Can Now Unmention Yourself From A Tweet

"Sometimes you want to see yourself out," the social media giant said in a tweet, which you can view below. "Take control of your mentions and leave a conversation with Unmentioning, now rolling out to everyone on all devices."

So, what exactly is this so-called "unmention" feature? According to Engadget, the capability to delete an undesired conversation from Twitter is referred to as "unmention."

How To Unmention Yourself

You can untag yourself from a tweet by selecting "Leave this conversation" from the three-dot menu that appears next to a reply in the thread you want to leave.

What Will Happen When You Unmentioned Yourself

TechCrunch noted that your Twitter handle will turn gray after you unmention yourself from a tweet, letting people know that you have chosen not to participate in the thread and cannot be added back in. Notifications will also be disabled if you unmention yourself.

This Feature Has Been Tested Since April

This functionality has been in development for almost a year. Last summer, Twitter first hinted at the idea, claiming it was designed to stop the kind of "unwanted attention" that frequently results in harassment. It began testing it in April, but it was only available to a select number of online users, TechCrunch and Engadget reported.

This Update Is Part of Bigger Picture

The update represents Twitter's most recent attempt to give users more control over how others can connect with them, particularly during times when they could be more vulnerable to harassment.

According to TechCrunch, Safety Mode, an anti-abuse feature that enables users who are experiencing harassment to filter out abuse, was first tested by Twitter in September. Twitter analyzes conversations while in Safety Mode and automatically disables accounts that are sending abusive messages. In February, the company extended the Safety Mode test.

Users on Twitter have the option to specify who is allowed to react to a tweet as part of another anti-abuse feature. There are three choices: everyone on Twitter, people you follow, or just accounts you mention. Unmentioning is the first of several previously mentioned safety aspects that is finally being made available to users worldwide, even though this most recent feature is not the long-desired feature to edit tweets.

Twitter has acknowledged that since last year, it has been developing a much-anticipated edit function, as per CNET. Later this year, the edit button will be trialed on Twitter Blue, a $3 per month membership service that enables you to delete tweets and read articles without advertisements.

Hopefully, we can soon get the additional capabilities that are currently in development, like controlling who can view your tweets.
