PS5 Price Increase? Sony Refuses to Rule Out its Possibility

Is a PS5 price increase coming our way? It is not so clear as of yet as Sony refuses to completely rule out whether we are seeing a more expensive PlayStation 5 in the coming months.

Since the release of the Sony PS5 in September 2020, its supply has consistently been rare, making restocks a much-anticipated occasion.

However, its retail pricing remains the same even as scalpers and resellers have been skyrocketing its price tag.

PS5 Price Increase?

According to a report by Tom's Guide, the Sony PS5 retail price costs $499, which has been the same since its 2020 debut. Meanwhile, the Digital Edition retails for only $399.

But this time, inflation across the world has become uncontrollably high. Therefore, various products have already jacked up their pricing to keep up with the situation.

Not to mention that the microchip shortage, which has been making PS5 stocks limited, persists, as per a news story by Comicbook.com

The news outlet further notes that there are other issues that the Sony gaming console is grappling with, such as the shipping crisis and the raging labor shortage.

And as such, Comicbook.com notes that there is no doubt that the cost of producing the next-generation PlayStation has become more expensive nowadays.

But despite that, the most popular gaming consoles, such as the PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and the Nintendo Switch, have yet to hike their current pricing.

That said, some are wondering if gaming consoles are the next to get the inevitable price hikes amid the worsening inflation.

Sony Refuses to Rule Out PS5 Price Hike

According to the latest story by Game Spot, Sony recently had an earnings briefing, highlighting the impressive sales figures of the PS5.

The Japanese gaming firm reveals that the PS5 has already sold a whopping 21.7 million units since Sony launched roughly two years ago.

But as Sony was boasting about PS5 shipments, one of the investors questioned if there is a looming price increase for its gaming console.

The Chief Finance Office of Sony, Hiroki Totoki, responded vaguely to plans of a PS5 price hike.

The Sony exec admits that the tech giant is not yet ready to speak about the matter, but Totoki did not rule out its price increase.

The CFO said during the earnings call with its investors that "at this point in time there is nothing specific I can share with you about prices."

So in the meantime, it ain't clear if the PS5 is getting a much heftier price tag moving forward. But it might be right around the corner anytime soon.
