The "Resident Evil" Netflix series has been canceled after just one season.

According to the report by Deadline, "The news, which comes a month and a half after the series' July 14 release, is not entirely surprising as the drama did not have a particularly strong showing on Netflix's Top 10 and cost vs. viewing is the streamer's leading renewal criterion."

The report adds that the series fell out of the Top 10 rankings after just three weeks. "Resident Evil" was also received negatively by both fans and critics alike with Deadline noting that it "logged underwhelming 55% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 27% audience score."

A report by Polygon says that its own review of the Netflix series points out the show's "careful devotion to the series' weird, and often tampered with, canon — and just how boring the show is as a result."

'Resident Evil' Netflix Series

The "Resident Evil" Netflix series was released on July 14 and has a total of eight episodes.

It story focuses on Albert Wesker, arguably the best known villain from the video game franchise, and his twin daughters, Billie and Jade. Unlike their father, their twins are not canon as far as the video games are concerned.

The series' episodes focus on two timelines. The first one is set in South Africa as it is where the Umbrella Corporation, where Albert Wesker works, has its headquarters. The second timeline is set in the future and showcases a world that is full of zombies.

Lance Reddick plays the role of Albert Wesker while Ella Balinska Adeline Rudolph play the older versions of Jade and Billie, respectively. Paola Núñez, Tamara Smart, and Siena Agudong are also part of the cast.

'Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City'

The Netflix series is the third live action adaptation of the popular survival horror video game franchise. A reboot film,"Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City," was released in 2021 and likewise failed to impress both fans an critics.

Unlike the Netflix series, the film reboot features characters from the video game franchise, such as siblings Chris and Claire Redfield, Leon Scott Kennedy, and Jill Valentine. The film also chose to stick to the story of the video games, particularly the oldest ones in the franchise.

The film stars Kaya Scodelario, Robbie Amell, Tom Hopper, Hannah John-Kamen, and Avan Jogia, among others.
