On Monday, AMD revealed the Ryzen 7000 series of desktop processors. And here's what AMD claimed: its "worst" Ryzen 7000 processor will outperform Core i9-12900K, Intel's best 12th-gen"Alder Lake" chip.

I know, quite a boast there. But can this processor really stand up to its claim? We will find out soon.

Launch of Ryzen 7000: What Should You Expect

AMD is now prepared to follow up on its first Ryzen 5000 desktop processors with Ryzen 7000, over two years after they were first introduced.

Before we discuss the specs of Ryzen 7000, did you ever wonder where the 6000-series is? Well, the company did not really skip it. AMD's 6000-series CPUs are only available for laptops, according to Ars Technica.

The company revealed pricing and availability for the Ryzen 7000 CPUs built on the Zen 4 architecture as well as more information about the corresponding AM5, yesterday.

AMD's first 5nm processor, Ryzen 7000, also uses the company's new AM5 motherboard socket. In other words, in order to use the new processors, enthusiasts must purchase new motherboards, as per PCWorld.

Zen 4 vs Zen 3 Architecture: What Are the Improvements

All four processors that make up the first wave of Zen 4 desktop family - the Ryzen 7600X, 7700X, 7900X, and the 7950X - will be available on Sept. 27.

According to AMD, "optimizations" achieved during the development of Zen 4 have raised its instructions-per-clock (IPC) increase over Zen 3 to an average of 13%.

The 7950X's highest clock speed has already risen to 5.7 GHz, 800 MHz higher than the Ryzen 5950X's boost clock.

Overall, this should result in the 7950X being an average of 29% quicker than the 5950X at activities like gaming that benefit from single-threaded performance.

When comparing Zen 4 to Zen 3, AMD also makes significant claims, particularly on performance per watt.

Meanwhile, AMD is sticking to the same core counts it used for Zen 3.

How Much Is Ryzen 7000 CPUs

AMD fans will definitely be thrilled with this other good news: AMD said its top-end 7950X will be priced at $699. This is $100 less than the price of the Ryzen 5950X when it launched in late 2020, as per Ars Technica.

The Ryzen 7000-series will launch with four more pricey, high-end components. The lower-end CPUs for mainstream and entry-level configurations, on the other hand, would follow the following year.

According to PCWorld, here's how fast the Ryzen 7000 family will be and their prices:

  • Ryzen 7600X: $299, 6 cores/12 threads, 4.7GHz base/5.3GHz turbo (105W TDP)

  • Ryzen 7700X: $399, 8 cores/16 threads, 4.5GHz base/5.4GHz turbo (105W TDP)

  • Ryzen 7900X: $549, 12 cores/24 threads, 4.7GHz base/5.6GHz turbo (170W TDP)

  • Ryzen 7950X: $699, 16 cores/32 threads, 4.5GHz base/5.7GHz turbo (170W TDP)

These processors lack an integrated graphics core but do have some very basic "GPU-like" display driving features, PCWorld noted.
