Steam's New Update Now Introduces Top-Selling Games a-la the Billboard 100

Frustrated After the Latest Steam Outage? X Reasons Why Steam Is Frequently Down
A few days ago, several Steam users reported an outage that produced weird images when booting up. For those who are frustrated with the unexpected Steam outage, there are three reasons why the app is frequently down. raphaelsilva/Pixabay

A new update to Steam has seen Valve's digital game storefront put the best-selling games on its platform in a different way.

By "different," we mean the games are looking like they're the top picks on a Billboard Hot 100 song chart. As reported by PC Gamer, the update has replaced the Steam Top 100 page (which used to show the platform's most popular titles in terms of concurrent players). Now, it displays the top-sellers, including free-to-play games and even pre-orders, in a ranked list sorted by overall revenue.

A quick visit to Steam will show you how the list works. As of this writing, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II (the remake, not the original one) is the top dog when it comes to overall dollar sales. It is followed by cutesy FPS Slime Rancher 2, with Apex Legends, CS: GO, and Cyberpunk 2077 rounding out the Top 5 (good job on the rebound, CDPR).

The next five Steam games are just the usual suspects at this point, with PUBG at six, followed by DOTA 2, FIFA 23, Destiny 2, and Potion Permit at 10th (perhaps the only odd one out). This goes on for the rest of the Top 100 sellers list.

As per the original report, the new list is officially called "Steam Charts." But if that name sounds familiar to you, that's because there already is a website also called Steam Charts. But that website in its current form is only showing the top games by player count, and not by the money they're making at a certain point in time. Player count (or more specifically concurrent player count) is an entirely different metric when checking the popularity of a certain game.

For now, you can check out the update and see which Steam games players are flocking to in recent times. Maybe you'd find the next game you'll play for a while in this list, considering how a good amount of the titles in the new to-selling Steam games chart are also on sale at this very moment.

Moving Up the Steam List

The most interesting thing about this is how the chart is also tracking how many places a game has moved up the list. As of this writing, COD MW2 has moved up an insane 19 places to the top of the chart. This might be due to the mounting hype for the game, which was punctuated by a slew of recent gameplay reveals. Furthermore, current second-placer Slime Rancher 2 seems to have come out of nowhere since it doesn't feature a change in its ranking - it's completely new to the list.

As for the games that have had the biggest jumps, perhaps the most notable one is Cyberpunk 2077. Sure, there are other games on Steam's list that have climbed up more places (i.e. Stellaris ranked up 81 places to number 12 right now, which is crazy), but Cyberpunk's redemption is in full view right now. This could be due to the recently released Edgerunners anime on Netflix, a slew of new updates, and the imminent launch of the game's first DLC expansion - almost two years after the game first came out (via IGN).
