Google is Shutting Down Driving Mode

Multitasking while on the road is a dangerous thing. That has been established. That's why smart assistants come in handy when you have your hands on the steering wheel with nobody else in the car to help you with navigation when needed.

Google Assistant Driving Mode is a neat tool to access map directions without averting your eyesight from the road. Unfortunately, the voice command assistant is shutting down on November 21st. It has been confirmed by Google as mentioned in The Verge.

Replacing Android Auto

Back in August 2021, Google announced that Android Auto will officially be removed, but they also followed it with the fact that Google Assistant's driving mode will replace it. The Google Assistant driving mode offers the same features that Android Auto has.

The two mentioned apps both have navigation assistance, as well as other things like calls, text messages, and music. However, Android Auto can be picky when it comes to car compatibility, while Google Assistant driving mode allows drivers to access the infotainment system even without worrying about car compatibility or head unit.

Worry not, for you won't be completely left without assistance. When the Driving Mode feature is taken off the shelf, you can easily access its features in Google Maps. It would just be an extra step. The only downside to this is that not all cars have the digital navigation hub used for such apps.

What Are the Alternatives?

If you absolutely need navigation apps to help you get to places where you might get lost, here are alternative apps you could try according to Android Authority.

HERE WeGo Maps can be quite useful and is a close competitor to Google Maps for navigation. It has an interface that is easy on the eyes. It also has a useful feature wherein you can download the map for your region offline, which is essential when your data connection can be a bit spotty. You can also access traffic information and public transit maps.

MapFactor is also a contender for navigation apps. It has what drivers mostly need like basic navigation and GPS features. The app uses OpenStreetMap, and users may choose to avail other map options, but they will no longer be free like the basic app features. It also has voice directions, cross-border routing, 2D and 3D modes, and also day and night themes.

MapQuest is one of the underrated apps available. It offers the same turn-by-turn directions and live traffic updates. The app also has a nifty feature where it redirects you according to traffic or find services that provide cheaper gas. You may also call a tow truck service using the app when needed.

Waze is also among the apps you may use. The app has the similar turn-by-turn navigation feature. Since it collects traffic information from other app users, it displays real-time information for traffic conditions and road structure. It may not be essential to driving, but you can choose to change the app's navigation voice to famous personalities. This includes Morgan Freeman, T-Pain, DJ Khaled, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cookie Monster, Colonel Sanders, Kevin Hart, Shaq, and others.
