7 Major Artists that Started on YouTube

How often do you scan through YouTube and come across covers or original songs that are so impressive, they deserve more attention than they get? It's nice to see someone who is lucky enough to be discovered and goes ahead to join the big leagues. Here are some artists that started out on YouTube.

1. Justin Bieber

We all know Justin Bieber. He's probably one of the biggest music stars out there. He actually started out differently from the other YouTube singers since it was just a single video of him that was discovered. Scooter Braun accidentally clicked on a video of young Justin singing "So Sick" by Ne-yo, and was impressed by it.

Soon enough, Justin Bieber released his first song, "One Time" which made preteen girls fall in love with him. Thus, the era of "Bieber Bangs" and "Bieber Fever" began. Now, Justin achieved many things in the music industry, including collaborations with other big names.

2. Charlie Puth

Charlie Puth used to make covers on YouTube, sometimes with other content creators. One particular video, where he sang "Someone Like You" by Adele with Emily Luther, was discovered by Ellen DeGeneres.

The "See You Again" singer studied at Berklee College of Music, which was a prestigious music school. This certainly helped with his music career, being known as the artist with the perfect pitch.

3. Austin Mahone

The young artist was discovered through his cover of Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe." as mentioned in Teen Vogue. He was the typical hearthrob at the time- braces, side-swept bangs, adorable puppy eyes, and small ear piercings.

He went on to make hit songs like "Say You're Just A Friend" and "All I Ever Need," and even collaborated with Pitbull.

4. Alessia Cara

Alessia Cara was still in school when she started posting music covers on YouTube. With a guitar in hand, she made acoustic covers of several songs. The daughter of EP Entertainment's founder showed a video of Alessia from YouTube, which made it possible for her to record demos.

She was catapulted to the top charts with her debut album, and she went on and sang the soundtrack "How Far I'll Go" from the Disney movie Moana.

5. Joji

If you're one of those people who spend a lot of time on YouTube, you may have seen a few videos of "Pink Guy" or "Filthy Frank," as mentioned in Pop Buzz. If so, then you'd know that Joji used to make music that is more comedic and weird in nature, apart from videos of him just doing peculiar things.

He is now one of the mainstream artists. It even came as a shock to some people that he had somewhat of a colorful past on YouTube, especially pink. Either way. The Japanese artist still created hit songs like "Sanctuary" and "Glimpse of Us."

6. Shawn Mendes

Shawn Mendes used to join cover contests when he was still young. Still, he gained popularity on the Vine app by posting short covers and posting antics with other members of Magcon, which is a group of young boys posting comedic content. He is now a famous artist that has won many music awards.

7. Doja Cat

Before venturing into music, Doja Cat used to do beauty tutorials, based on an article from Showbiz Cheat Sheet. If you're going to search for those videos, you shouldn't since you'll no longer find them. She then got a lot of attention for her song "MOOO!" for its quirkiness and catchiness.

Now, Doja has released songs like "Say So" which started a TikTok dance craze, and another that made it as an official soundtrack in Birds of Prey, a movie starring Margot Robbie.
