5 Movies Based on World History That You Can Watch Right Now on Netflix

History, to no one's surprise, has been a frequent source of inspiration for movies, TV series, books, and even songs and plays. Movies, in particular, feature history very often. You have a number of World War II films, movies based on the lives of historical figures, and so on.

If you happen to be a fan of historical movies or you just want something interesting to watch, here is a list of five movies based on world history that you can watch on Netflix right now:

'Dance of the 41'

1901 saw the eruption of a society scandal in Mexico after an illegal police raid was conducted against a private home in Mexico City. A party was taking place inside that home that were attended by a group of men and some of these men were dressed in women's clothing. The whole incident has since been referred to as the Dance of the Forty-One

"Dance of the 41," the 2020 movie directed by David Pablos focuses on the scandal, specifically the events that led up to it. Alfonso Herrera, Mabel Cadena, Emiliano Zurita, and Fernando Becerril are part of the cast.

'First They Killed My Father'

Based on the memoir of Cambodian-American human rights activist Loung Ung, "First They Killed My Father" is written by Ung and Angelina Jolie, who also directed the movie. Released in 2017, the story focuses on a seven-year-old Ung who had to train as a child soldier during Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia. The regime ruled in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979.

Sreymoch Sareum leads the cast as the seven-year-old Ung. You can watch "First They Killed My Father" on Netflix.

'The Forgotten Battle'

No list of movies based on world history will ever be complete without a World War II flick. For this list, we have decided to include the 2020 Dutch film "The Forgotten Battle."

This historical movie focuses on the Battle of the Scheldt, which took place in Belgium in 1944. Gijs Blom, Jamie Flatters, and Tom Felton lead the cast. You can watch "The Forgotten Battle" on Netflix.

'Lawrence of Arabia'

If classics from Old Hollywood are right up your alley, you might want to check out "Lawrence of Arabia."

Released in 1962, this historical film is based on the life of British archaeologist T. E. Lawrence and his book "Seven Pillars of Wisdom," which was published in 1926. Peter O'Toole stars as T. E. Lawrence, while Alec Guinness plays Prince Faisal. Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, and Omar Sharif are also part of the cast.

The restored version of "Lawrence of Arabia" is available to watch on Netflix.

'The Trial of the Chicago 7'

Released in 2020, the story of "The Trial of the Chicago 7" focuses on a group of anti-Vietnam war supporters known in American history as the Chicago Seven. The group had been charged with conspiracy and crossing state lines with the intent of crossing a riot.

The members of the Chicago Seven and the actors who portrayed them in the film are as follows:

  • Daniel Flaherty portrays John Froines
  • Eddie Redmayne portrays Tom Hayden
  • Jeremy Strong portrays Jerry Rubin
  • John Carroll Lynch portrays David Dellinger

  • Sacha Baron Cohen portrays Abbie Hoffman
