Apple engineer Esge Andersen shared details on why there is no Lossless Audio support for the AirPods Pro 2, which was released this year.
According to 9to5 Mac, the company has been focusing instead on other ways to provide high-quality audio to users without the Lossless codec.
Andersen Details How The Tech Giant Came Up With The Decision
This year, Apple released the second generation AirPods Pro, but as much as it brings an enhanced experience to users, it also comes with earbuds that lack Lossless audio support.
In an interview with What Hi-Fi, Andersen, who is an acoustics team engineer at the tech company, says that they decided to redesign the device to improve its sound.
According to the engineer, while the new generation of AirPods looks like the original, they optimized the airflow for audio drivers as the movement of air is key to good sound.
When we talk about good sound, it's all about how we move the air in the product.., but it's about ensuring that we also design for airflow," the engineer claims.
With that, the company put a particular focus on improving the high-frequency response, giving the AirPods Pro 2 cleaner highs, and more precise, deeper bass.
According to Tech Radar, Andersen also revealed that the earbuds are engineered to act differently depending on the device they're connected to, but they made sure to keep the sound impressive.
Apple says that they wanted to give everyone an AirPods Max quality in their AirPods Pro 2, which is why it requires a lot of engineering should they want to achieve that vision.
Andersen also talks about how there needs to be a compromise to improve the earbuds but says that the tech giant understands that they can not make the AirPods Pro 2 perfect for everybody.
Despite this, the tech giant believes that the change will give its customers the best experience no matter what it might mean.
Many Reviewers Are Still Wondering About Lossless
While the vision to improve the users' experience is clear to Apple, many AirPods users were still upset that the second-generation AirPods did not have Lossless support.
It is important to note that Lossless codecs present minimal or no compression, which means that it allows users to hear high-fidelity sounds.
However, Andersen believes that Apple can achieve that without Lossless audio, and if they do, it will be a big stride for the company.
"We want to push the sound quality forward, and we can do that with a lot of other elements. We don't think that the codec currently is the limitation of audio quality on Bluetooth products," he adds, Forbes writes.
Audio codes that can push the streaming capability to higher bitrate audio over Bluetooth already exist, but Apple has never brought them to AirPods.
However, according to 9to5 Mac, the company is open to changes with their codec uses moving forward, Andersen reveals on "What Hi-Fi."
At the moment, the sound engineer hints at more changes coming to the tech giant's earbuds, but he says that there is not yet a certainty as to what they might be yet, Forbes reports.
