YouTube Music users can now create their very own radio stations.
The music branch of the popular video-sharing platform recently added a feature that would allow users to pick the music artists of their choosing and create a radio station using their works.
YouTube previously released the feature in 2022 to beta test it to get the adjustments, enhancements, and improvements the feature needs before the company launches it, per Android Police.
YouTube Music Radio Stations Details
YouTube mentioned in an email to Tech Crunch that the new radio functionality, also called Radio Builder, aims to give users more control over their listening experiences with the app, allowing them to "slice their music in many ways currently unavailable to them" regardless of what music platform they're using.
YouTube Music previously had a similar feature that would start a radio when the currently selected song ended, per Sam Mobile.
The new feature is said to be the inverse of the model popular music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music offer users, which allows them to create playlists based on a specific song or artist but prohibits them from making additional customization beyond that point.
YouTube Music's new Radio Builder feature is available to all users on both Android and iOS devices regardless of whether they are paying for a YouTube Music subscription or not, per Google spokesperson Paul Pennington.
How To Use YouTube Music Radio Builder
YouTube Music's new Radio Feature works by combining key music building blocks such as artists and common music descriptors, YouTube said. However, users must navigate to the YouTube Music homepage and scroll down until they see "Your Music Tuner."
Doing so will have the app ask users to build their custom station by selecting up to 30 artists. The app will then ask users to choose whether they want to only hear music from them or if they want it to play songs from similar musicians, per The Verge.
Users can also have the app play songs they're familiar with, songs that are new to them, or a mix of the two options and add filters, giving users the freedom to tune the mix to their liking. These three options are called "Familiar," "Blend," and "Discover" in the app. Additionally, the filters consist of eight options, which are Popular, Deep Cuts, New Releases, Pump-Up, Chill, Upbeat, Downbeat, and Focus.
The freedom the new feature gives users allows them to combine tracks from their favorite artists, music genres, and music style to create their custom radio station.
Once users confirm their selection, the new radio station will be named after the artists or features of the playlist, making the radio station's title pretty random. Unfortunately, users can't edit the radio station's title to make them easy to find, according to 9to5Google.
Completing a radio station allows users to save it by hitting the "Add to Library" button. The radio station will appear in the "Listen again" carousel for easy access.
