Snapchat Sounds Music Library Expansion Details

Snap mentioned in its blog post that it signed licensing deals with many direct-licensing publishers to expand Snapchat's Sounds music library for Snapchat users to enjoy. The direct-licensing publishers include but are not limited to the following:

  • UnitedMasters (US)
  • BUMA/STEMRA (Netherlands)
  • SUISA Digital Licensing AG (Switzerland)

Snap also made deals with a repertoire of IP bodies, which includes the following:

  • SUISA (Switzerland)
  • AKKA/LAA (Latvia)
  • Albautor (Albania)
  • Armauthor (Armenia)
  • Autodia (Greece)
  • COMP (Pakistan)
  • EAÜ (Estonia)
  • GCA (Georgia)
  • LATGA (Lithuania)
  • SOZA (Slovakia)
  • Abramus Digital (Brazil)
  • Soundreef (Italy)

Tech Crunch mentioned that a "selection" of work from singers and songwriters signed up with UnitedMasters will be available in Snapchat's Soudns music library, along with sounds from local artists signed under BUMA/STEMRA and SUISA Digital's library.

Snap mentioned that these deals and the partnerships it made would add local artists' music to Snapchat's Sounds music library, allowing Snapchat users and content creators more options to "innovate" their posts. The expansion also allows Snapchat users and content creators to embed licensed music more easily into their messages and Snap posts across its social media platform and creative tools like augmented reality Lenses.

Previously, Snap only had deals with major and independent record labels and music publishers worldwide, like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Warner Chappell, and Kobalt. The company also made licensing deals with over 9000 independent music publishers and labels to add their artists' music to their library, giving Snapchat users and content creators access to their music.

"By offering a wider selection of music, we want to enable discovery and make it easier for Snapchatters around the world to express themselves creatively with the music they love," said Ted Suh, Global Head of Music Partnerships at Snap.

Emerging artists get more benefits with the licensing deals Snap made. The company mentioned that those working with UnitedMasters could get grants through Snap's Sounds Creator Fund, which could award up to $5,000 to 20 songs per month to them.

Meanwhile, established artists can get creative support through the grant to help them establish their "relevancy" with audiences.

Snap started its Sounds Creator Fund sometime in 2022 in partnership with DistroKit.

What Is Snapchat's Sounds Music Library?

Snapchat's Sounds music library lets users add licensed song clips, excerpts from TV and movies, and their own original audio to their posts on the platform, per Snap.

The feature is Snap's direct response to TikTok's sudden popularity rise in 2020 to match its competitor's capabilities and offerings; TikTok previously announced it allows artists to upload their music direct to the app and earn royalties when other TikTok users add their music to their posts on the platform.
