7 Saddest Moments in 'How I Met Your Mother'

"How I Met You Mother" is one of those comfort shows that you put on when you feel like the world is getting you down, but some episodes are just not meant to cheer you up. Here are the saddest moments in the sitcom that you probably cried in.

1. When Marshall's Dad Passed Away

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

Marshall and his father had the kind of bind that some people can only dream of, so the circumstances that happened before Lily told him of his father's passing were just as excruciating as the writers intended it to be. Just as glad as Marshall was to tell his father good news, he was met with a devastating one.

2. Lily Admitting Her Biggest Secret

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

Being a mother means that you have to take on responsibilities that having a child brings, but that can also mean that you have to set your own dreams aside, and not live the life you wanted. She opened up to Ted, saying that sometimes, she wants to just pack a bag, leave and never come back, to assure Ted that what he was about to wasn't the most terrible thing.

3. When Robin Arrived with Kevin

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

Barney was never really the serious type when it comes to relationships, so when he decided to be one for Robin, fans were over the moon. But then again, both were in a relationship. Deciding that they would break up with their partners to be with one another, Barney broke up with Nora but Robin stayed with Kevin.

4. Ted Imagining What He Would've Said to Tracy

Recounting the times when Ted hadn't meant Tracy yet, he imagined that he would go to her apartment 45 days before they met and tell her about the life they will live. He went early on just so he could have those extra 45 days with her. You'll realize how painful it is when you already know what happens to Tracy in the end.

5. Robin Realizing She'll Never Have Kids

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

Robin is known as the character who knew what she wants. She already had plans years ahead of her, and they are mostly about her career in journalism. She never really thought about having kids, and she wasn't very fond of them either, but learning that she can never have kids made her realize that even if she did change her mind, it was already impossible, to begin with.

6. Marshall and Lily's Fight in the Hotel

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

Lily left Marshall for San Francisco when she decided to pursue her dreams. Even though she came back, it was brought up again during their fight in the episode "Unpause," where Marshall asked Lily if she would even come back if she found success, saying that he, their son Marvin, and other future children were just the "consolation prize."

7. Robin Becomes Unsure on Her Wedding Day

How I Met Your Mother
CBS

Ted has always loved Robin, and it was already painful enough that he was watching her get married to one of his best friends, so when Robin said that maybe she should've been marrying Ted instead of Barney for finding her (very important) locket, it must've driven daggers through poor Ted's heart, denying her for his friendship with both Barney and Robin.
