Pac-Man will soon be 43 years old, and LEGO has a great way of celebrating the event.
The popular plastic construction toy maker recently announced it had collaborated with Bandai Namco to release a LEGO recreation of a Pac-Man Arcade Set sometime in June in celebration of Pac-Man's 43rd anniversary.
Bandai Namco previously released the first Pac-Man game on May 22, 1980, in Japan, with the US receiving the game later in October of the same year, per ThoughtCo.
LEGO Pac-Man Arcade Set Recreation Details
LEGO mentioned in its announcement that the set based on a Pac-Man arcade cabinet is huge and would require quite an investment in time and resources to fully assemble it.
The company stated that the model measures 12.5 inches high and 10 inches wide, and 7 inches deep; it consists of 2,650 pieces - three of them are the 3D figures of Pac-Man, Blinky, and Clyde that customers could display rather than put on the set, per Gizmodo.
LEGO also added a buildable vignette featuring a female LEGO minifigure playing an even smaller version of a Pac-Man cabinet in a retro arcade setting. Customers could hide the vignette within the set for safekeeping if they so wish.
Last but not least is one light-brick that lights up the coin slot on the set, though it doesn't accept any coins. Other hidden features include a crank on the side of the cabinet that customers can turn to move the characters around the game's maze.
Unfortunately, the arcade cabinet doesn't allow you to control Pac-Man himself and play through the maze, though they could at least pretend to do so while making the iconic sound effect every time they do so.
LEGO Designer Sven Franic called the process of designing the set "a delight," as the company is "always looking for new and exciting ways to bring classic gaming experiences to life." He added that the team assigned to work on the set carefully considered and crafted every detail in it, which resulted in a one-of-a-kind LEGO creation that captures the magic of the original game as it first reached the US in 1980.
"We are thrilled to share this incredible build with the world and cannot wait to see the joy it brings to fans of all ages," Franic said.
LEGO Pac-Man Arcade Set Release Date And Price
LEGO mentioned that the Pac-Man Arcade set would cost customers $269.99 and is limited to those 18 years old and above. However, it would become available on two different dates.
LEGO VIP members can buy the set earlier than others; they can purchase it as early as June 1 from LEGO.com/PAC-MAN and LEGO Stores. Non-members and those that choose to buy the set later could do so on June 4.
While the new set is pricey, joining the LEGO VIP rewards program is free, allowing you to buy the set earlier if you so wish.
